ACCESS TO THE BLOG This blog will remain available indefinitely, as will your account on gendersex.net, and you’re certainly welcome to continue using it to share examples you come across of the rhetoric of gender and sexuality. But you might also consider joining the Facebook group I made for that purpose (which does not require that you friend me or any of the other members of the group, although please note that I do accept friend requests from students once the semester is over.)

FINAL DIGITAL STORYTELLING PROJECTS. Be sure to view the final projects posted by your classmates to enjoy the end result of all their hard work and creativity! Feel free to leave comments on any of the projects that particularly strike your interest. Even though the class is now over, the author of the post you comment on will still appreciate your feedback (and they’ll be notified of your comment by email).

DS Final Audio Essay

Transcript of Essay

Intro – Rhetorical Rational

Target Audience: the American public – mainly college aged people or professionals

Purpose: I want them to go away thinking about what they either take for granted or just don’t know, that the life of a woman, child or man is priceless and valuable without measure.  On the next level the end goal is get them to empathize to walk in their shoes for only a moment

Thesis: The way I see different genders and people in general is constantly evolving, most recently the trip to Mexico has deepened the value I have on individual people and the preciousness of the human spirit. The best way to understand others and the value of their personhood is to empathize and imagine their lives in vivid detail.

Rhetorical Strategies: I was trying mostly to bring life to each scene in the essay. I tried to make a general statement then back it up with rigorous details. Besides this I tried to make the reader/listener really feel like they were in Mexico with me.

Technology Used: I used audio technology simply posting it on an MP3 format.

Most Proud Of: The ways I felt I connected with my audience. It was really difficult trying to write for such a large diverse audience but I really felt like pulled it off well. I’m really excited about this final project and can’t wait to share it with others.

Growing Up Gender and Sexuality

GenderBiQueerSexual: an adventure in awkwardness

Purpose: This was undertaken as an attempt to give strong emotion and power to the comic form.  I felt that previous pieces using the comic form had a story to tell, but it often came off flat [pun intended].

Target Audience: This isn’t narrowly aimed at any audience, but the message is meant to resonate most with people who have had similar times of repression due to social stress.

The All American Grey Matter

The All American Grey Matter, started out merely as a project I Had to do for class. After numerous drafts and essays written I quickly understood the nature of this type of project. I understood that Id have the most impact simply doing what I do everyday – tell stories. These vignettes recount the memorable times in my life that shaped my gender and sexuality journey thus far. On a broader scale I’d hope for my audience to be anyone interested in gender and sexuality and the different ways they can manifest themselves. On a much more realistic scale, I feel my target audience would be my peers, especially those with a interest in gender and sexuality and that have at least a basic knowledge of said topic.

Stranger in My Skin

Audio: Stranger in My Skin Final

Rhetorical Rational:

Target Audience: My target audience is my friends, who have helped me through many hard times in my life. My secondary audience is younger women who can relate to these types of experiences.

Purpose: The main purpose of this essay is to tell a personal life experience to people so that they can see that many of people go through similar hard times growing up. Though in the end it also becomes a way to thank my friends for always being there to support me. Follow this link to read the full entry →

All Stories Can Have A Happy Ending

My story is geared towards people that have gone through a similar situation of abuse as well as people that are interested in how childhood trauma can affect development. My goal was to give listeners an idea of how my experience led me to where I am today and to send the message that things can get better. I try to use examples and analyzation to appeal to people’s logical side, and the story I think inherently appeals to peoples emotions.  I used garageband and had a little trouble but I think it worked okay. I learned a lot about my computer in this process in general, but I have never even know what garageband was before this project. I am really proud of this project, first because I am technologically challenged and I surprised myself in being able to do this, but second because even though doing this project has brought up a lot of hard memories and has even resulted in nightmares I was able to share my story. I feel that it is an important thing for people to hear because lots of the time experiences like mine are kept quiet and unheard.
