- RHETORIC G&S MAIN BLOG
- ABOUTI own and manage the gendersex.net domain name and use it for two main purposes: to provide general resources on the study of gender and sexuality and to provide specific resources for my WRTG 3020 classes at CU Boulder, which focus on the topic of “The Rhetoric of Gender and Sexuality.” You can read more about these two purposes below. Most of the materials on the site are visible to all viewers, but some material is restricted only to users who are logged into their gendersex.net accounts, such as articles subject to copyright or conversations among students that are of a personal nature. RESOURCES FOR GENDER AND SEXUALITY STUDIES The primary audience for materials on the main Rhetoric of Gender & Sexuality site includes scholars and students in the fields of gender studies and LGBT studies, as well as anyone interested in learning more about these fields. The primary purpose of the site is to provide resources for investigating issues such as the origins of gender identity, the impact of a binary model of gender, and the nature of sexual orientation. The collection includes links to relevant web sites, a main blog with posts in a variety of categories, and…

The rhetorical purpose of “open mindedness”
0
‘Yay for Gay’ iPad Kids’ Book ‘Teaches Open-mindedness’ This article serves as a good example of why it’s important to pay attention to the rhetorical context of an artifact before you decide how to interpret it or how to let it influence your own thinking. The Facts are Never Neutral At first glance, it might seem as though the author …
Read More“Broetry” as a rhetorical strategy
Check out this NPR story on “Broetry,” which is poetry for guys (“bro’s”) who don’t like poetry. Calling this kind of writing “broetry” is an interesting rhetorical strategy, in that it reinforces gender norms about men and poetry while at the same time trying to overcome them.
Read More“Princess boy” as a rhetorical strategy
One of the editors of the Study Guide to the Rhetoric of Gender Identity posted this video as an artifact, and I thought it was interesting enough to be shared here as well. Consider in particular the rhetorical impact of the mother’s decision to call her son a “princess boy,” rather than insisting that he must really want to be …
Read MoreTeaching LGBT history in public schools
According to this CNN article, “California governor signs bill requiring schools to teach gay history”, the governor of California has recently signed into law a bill that “will require public schools in the state to teach students about the contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans.” The way the debate is framed is worth noting, in the context of …
Read MoreThe story behind the removal of homosexuality from the DSM
This radio story originally aired January 18, 2002, on This American Life. I managed to catch a re-run on NPR a while back and ended up sitting in my car to listen to the whole thing, even after I’d arrived at my destination. Very interesting story of “how the American Psychiatric Association decided in 1973 that homosexuality was no longer …

Interesting discussion in this June 30, 2011, article from the New York Times: Softball Case Raises Question: Who Qualifies as Gay? The five ballplayers summoned before a protest committee at the Gay Softball World Series stood accused of cheating. Their alleged offense: heterosexuality. Inside a small room, surrounded by committee members and other softball officials, the players said they were …
Read MoreDiscussion of Gender Identity Disorder on Dr. Phil
Here’s a good example of the rhetoric of gender identity disorder. Note how each participant discusses gender and sex as well as the concept of gender identity disorder. The “specialist” makes a few rhetorical mistakes. For example, he ignored the mother’s comment that she was not in fact overly invested in her child when the child still identified as a …
Read MoreHarsh school reaction to a boy wearing a dress
News story on Perez Hilton’s web site: Boy Suspended From School For A YEAR For Wearing Dress And Heels! Devon posted this on the Summer 2011 class blog, but I wanted to post it over here as well as it’s a great example of how harshly gender is policed, particularly among boys, even today. Seriously, would the world come to …

This recent article in the New York Times takes up the question of whether certain as featuring women are really as “empowering” as they claim to be: “The Empowerment Mystique” by Peggy Orienstein (September 24, 2010).
Read MoreGender Roles- Interview with Kids
This youtube interview of kids and their ideas of gender roles is very interesting. How do kids at this age know so much about what men and women should look and act like? It scares me that these kids cant be (looks and act like) whoever they want to be without thinking about it first. Schools enforce these gender norms …
