- ABOUTI own and manage the gendersex.net domain name and use it for two main purposes: to provide general resources on the study of gender and sexuality and to provide specific resources for my WRTG 3020 classes at CU Boulder, which focus on the topic of “The Rhetoric of Gender and Sexuality.” You can read more about these two purposes below. Most of the materials on the site are visible to all viewers, but some material is restricted only to users who are logged into their gendersex.net accounts, such as articles subject to copyright or conversations among students that are of a personal nature. RESOURCES FOR GENDER AND SEXUALITY STUDIES The primary audience for materials on the main Rhetoric of Gender & Sexuality site includes scholars and students in the fields of gender studies and LGBT studies, as well as anyone interested in learning more about these fields. The primary purpose of the site is to provide resources for investigating issues such as the origins of gender identity, the impact of a binary model of gender, and the nature of sexual orientation. Viagra Commercial – “We are the Champions”
This commercial for Viagra was my favorite artifact that I included in my portion of my group’s wiki, “Men in Physiological Pharmaceutical commercials.” It is a funny and light-hearted approach to a very sensitive subject for many couples, not just men. However, this does produce the notion that men are only “real men” if they are able to do “manly things” (i.e. have sex with a woman and not go “soft”).
“We are the Champions” by Queen blaring in the background reinforces male masculinity ten-fold. This is to say that men with untreated erectile dysfunction are worthless, no longer masculine, no longer “champions.” With ads like these, no wonder men are afraid to ask their doctors for male-enhancement drugs!
On a side note, this commercial includes very few women, who are probably just as happy that their partner can produce an erection! This commercial also shows that only men are involved in sexual intercourse. As long as men have an orgasm, who cares about their partners having an orgasm as well? Where are all the satisfied ladies?
Another student’s analysis:
Viagra’s commercial promotes and reinforces the idea that the measure of a man is defined by the size of his penis and libido. I found it interesting that Viagra markets male-enhancement pills as opposed to penis-enhancement pills. This suggests that a man is only man when his equipment is bigger and is dynamite in bed. Viagra suggests that their product restores a man’s masculinity and dignity.
However, the commercial depicts stereotypical heterosexual men (dancing with women for example), homosexual men don’t seem to be present. This perpetuates the message that sex is between a man and woman, and that heterosexual men are masculine, while homosexual men are not.
Easy Bake Oven Commercials

Across generations, Easy Bake Oven commercials consistently show only young girls or young girls with their mothers. By only including females in their commercials, it tends to enforce the “women should only be in the kitchen” gender role. To be honest, when I had an Easy Bake Oven years ago, I remember completely messing up every dessert I tried to make. I completely failed in what society tells me is “my calling.” When will the young boys who love the cook and bake get their day in the sun… or rather the kitchen?
President Obama “Throwing like a girl”

President Obama was criticized for throwing the opening pitch at a Nationals’ game “like a girl.” After, you will see former President Bush throwing the first pitch at the 3rd game of the 2001 World Series “like a man” should throw. Personally, I’m just offended that Obama is a White Sox fan…
